Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj): Jupiter's Gemstone of Wisdom and Fortune

The safest and most universally beneficial gemstone — and why it works for marriage, children, and prosperity.

Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) is the gemstone of Jupiter (Guru), and it is the safest and most universally beneficial gemstone in Vedic astrology. Because Jupiter is the great benefic, Pukhraj rarely causes harm even when not perfectly matched — making it the one stone most people can wear with confidence. It is especially recommended for Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants (Jupiter rules these signs), and for Aries, Cancer, Leo, and Scorpio ascendants (Jupiter is a functional benefic). Classical benefits include: support for marriage and finding a suitable partner (especially for women, where Jupiter signifies the husband), blessings for children and progeny, growth in wealth and wisdom, and protection during Jupiter Mahadasha. Worn in gold on the index finger on a Thursday, it works gently and steadily — its effects build over weeks and months rather than days.

A mother came to me worried about her daughter's delayed marriage. The daughter's chart showed Jupiter — the karaka of marriage for a woman — was weak but not afflicted. I recommended a Pukhraj. Eleven months later the daughter was engaged. I do not claim the stone arranged the marriage. I claim it strengthened the planet that governs that area of her life, and the chart's own promise unfolded on schedule.

Why Pukhraj is the people's gemstone

Where blue sapphire is fast and risky, yellow sapphire is gentle and forgiving. Jupiter is the planet of expansion, wisdom, and grace. Even a Pukhraj that is not perfectly suited rarely causes harm — at worst it does little. This safety margin is why it is the most widely recommended gemstone in India.

Classical benefits of Yellow Sapphire

  • Marriage — strengthens Jupiter, the significator of marriage for women and of children for both
  • Progeny — supports the 5th house themes of children
  • Wealth & wisdom — Jupiter governs prosperity, teachers, and higher knowledge
  • Protection — Jupiter's grace is considered protective against misfortune

Who should wear it

Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants (Jupiter is the ruling lord); Aries, Cancer, Leo, and Scorpio ascendants (Jupiter is a functional benefic). Most other ascendants can wear it during a Jupiter Mahadasha or for specific 5th/9th house strengthening — confirm with a chart reading.

How to wear Yellow Sapphire

Set in gold, worn on the index finger of the working hand, first worn on a Thursday morning during the waxing moon, after offering prayers to Jupiter. Minimum recommended weight is typically 3-5 carats, but the right size depends on your chart and body weight — a qualified astrologer should advise.
